Fibre laser supplier SPI Lasers has joined the research and technology organisation TWI as an industral member, enabling it to support the group’s development and promotion of fibre laser welding applications. Working with TWI will also help SPI build on its own welding expertise and provide enhanced technical knowledge to its customers.
‘Access to TWI’s joining expertise will greatly enhance our ability to develop new laser sources to tackle the challenging joining requirements of today’s industrial applications,’ said Dr Jack Gabzdyl vice president of SPI’s pulsed laser business line.
TWI will be evaluating SPI’s nanosecond pulsed welding process and adding it to its portfolio of joining services. SPI’s G4 100W fibre laser has already been installed at TWI for marking, engraving, cutting and surface engineering applications, in addition to nanosecond welding. The laser will be available to TWI’s industrial membership for application development and project work.
Dr Jon Blackburn of TWI commented: ‘We are very pleased to welcome SPI Lasers to our industrial membership and are excited by the prospect of working with the new nanosecond pulsed lasers which have already demonstrated the capability of meeting our members’ needs across a broad range of applications.'
TWI, an organisation at the forefront of laser welding, held an event on its ‘Latest Developments in Laser Welding’ last year in July, where delegates from the automotive, aerospace, energy and metalworking sectors came together to discuss the most recent welding projects taking place and techniques being used in the industry.
